Are
you a video production company looking for a way to
market your product?
You
have to be careful when looking for distribution.
Always read your contracts carefully to make sure
that your needs are being met and that there are no
surprises. Remember, the distributors are looking
to make every penny they possibly can. It's not a
personal issue, they are obligated to their stock
holders. They will stick to the wording of their contracts.
The best way to make certain that you are treated
fairly is to deal with all issues up-front and honestly.
If there is a circumstance that you have a concern
with, raise it and get it resolved BEFORE signing
the dotted line.
Also remember that distribution methods impact your
payouts. The whole writers strike of 2007 is largely
due to this issue. Internet and DVD delivery doesn't
have the same residual impact as other methods. Make
certain that your issues and concerns over other distribution
methods are handled up-front.
The miracle that was Desilu Productions (Desi Arnaz
and Lucille Ball) was their foresight in seeing the
need for reruns and to own the rights for future distribution.
This was the first time this was considered and led
them to film the production instead of using cheaper
methods. This led to a dynasty in the industry.
